Why You Can’t Relax Even When Everything’s Fine
I bet you’ll relate to this: a part of you decided, usually a long time ago, that the way to stay safe was to achieve, control, stay hypervigilant, never let anyone down, and/or always be the one who handles it.
And it worked. That part did its job. It's very possibly the reason you're as capable as you are today.
That’s not a personality quirk. That’s a protector.
The trouble is, it never got the memo that the danger passed, so it keeps running the same program. The one built for a version of your life that doesn't exist anymore.
It shows up as needing to check your phone one more time before you can rest. As staying in the room until it's 'done,' even when done doesn't really exist. As the tightness in your chest before a conversation that, on paper, has no real stakes.
Here's what I've noticed working with people who finally start to unwind this: the goal was never to get rid of the protector. It's not the enemy. It kept you safe when you needed it to. The goal is to thank it, and then gently let it know that you've got this one.
A few questions worth considering:
What is this part of you protecting, and when did it learn that this was its job?
What would it need to believe was true in order to stand down, even a little?
Where in your life are you still bracing for something that already happened, or that was never actually going to happen the way you feared?
You don't have to fight this part of yourself. You just have to invite it to step back so other parts of you can step forward.
